The August Junior Gippstar Award Winner is Sierra Roberts of Maffra for her achievements in the sport of Hockey. Sierra was selected into the State School Victoria u12 Girls Hockey Team, over two selection trials at the State Hockey Centre in April where over 60 girls trialled for a team of 14. The team competed at the School Sport Australia National Championships, in Cairns in August. The Victorian state team went through the tournament undefeated, winning the Gold medal and becoming national champions after beating the reigning champions over the last several years, Queensland, in the final match. Victoria has never won the championships in the entire history of the competition, first beginning in 1978. Sierra scored 3 of the teams goals, earning VIC star-player of the match in the games against SA and TAS. Earlier in July, Sierra participated in the Hockey Victoria Junior State Championships in Shepparton. Sierra captained the u14 Gippsland Bulls team (as a 12yo), following selection trials of players right across Gippsland. She scored one of the team’s 3 goals across the tournament and was named player of the match in the opening game. Sierra also captained the East Gippsland u14 representative team at the Junior Country Championships in May 2024. At the beginning of the year Sierra was invited to join the inaugural Gippsland Sports Academy hockey program (42 athletes across Gippsland aged 12-18). During the year Sierra also achieved selection through to the Final Player Assessment (the final 50 girls across Victoria) for the Victorian u14 State Team – Sierra missed state team selection by just 12 places against predominantly top age (14yo) girls.
Well done Sierra!
